Hundertwasser never lost his tendency to Walter Kampmann's trees, and the – inner – meeting was present to him all the time. When he lived in his lonely Hahnsäge in the northern woodquarter in Lower Austria in December 1967 for a longer time, it was the scent of the breaking winter leading him back to those origins. "Seeing the lights of the lanterns in the foggy rain and trees in the frost, then I am thinking of Walter Kampmann. Asking me which painters influenced me I always state Walter Kampmann."
With the circleshaped trees he amalgamates two figures, whose seamancaps often appear in his pictures. Windows close the architecture behind them. Here they are not open as usual but blind.
When Alberto della Vecchia discovers the Studio Quattro in Venice, in which the whole technical development of all possibilities regarding the process of the silkcut, especially the metalfoilstamping, seems to unfold, then there the next decisive step forward was done. Hundertwasser is working at the foils for the silkcut in Venice in 1968 and 1969. The points of the colourexcerpts tell us a lot about his share. It is the trees fascinating him: "Since 1948 I have been trying to paint the trees like Walter Kampmann. But I never succeeded in doing it. They became Hundertwasser-Kampmann trees, somehow more transparent and more colourful, but without the deep shining from the inside." Here they turned out in a masterly way.
