1968 had been a very eventful year for Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Reading the manifest “Los from Loos” (criticizing sterile architecture) was one of those events leading to a lot of publicity.
The order to create a new graphic (HWG 39) was placed by Herschel B. Chipp, who used to be the curator for modern art at the University Art Museum in Berkeley and a known connoisseur of Austrian art.
Chipp had been working on the exploration of life and work of Hundertwasser since 1966. A successful Hundertwasser-exhibition followed his research. This exhibition then went on tour – organized by Elvis Presley’s manager, Joachim Jean Aberbach. He and his brother Julian became one of the most important art collectors of Hundertwasser’s work in the USA.
HWG 39 “Sad not so sad is rainshine from Rainday on a rainy day” was a piece of art creating a new dimension regarding printing of silkscreens (coordinator: Alberto della Vecchia). First 10, after overprinting a total of 15 colors were printed; together with metal embossing.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser always preferred rainy days – he always stated that only on rainy days colors can show their brightness and true color.
